AMSTERDAM- On behalf of all of us at Fashion for Good, we hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. Our thoughts are with everyone that has been deeply affected by the current situation.

As the global Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect all of our daily lives, we are starting to perceive the effects and implications it has across industries and operations. We’re becoming aware of a new reality the likes of which we have not seen and the outcomes of which we cannot foresee. In these times of uncertainty, we acknowledge the path ahead will be a challenging one, both personally and professionally, as well as transformational. For the time being, we are pushing forward with our mission responsibly and appropriately, our team is working from home and is available as always, approaching each challenge as they become apparent.

We remain committed to the important work that we and our partners are doing and continue to show our support across the industry. For many pioneering brands, manufacturers and suppliers, sustainability and innovation are of high strategic importance, and indeed if the industry is to persevere, our combined focus is needed to ensure they remain a top priority.

Innovation, particularly in challenging times, has proven its relevance time and again to reinvigorate business as usual to achieve organisational objectives; to prevail and emerge stronger from this critical period, we must double down on our commitment to our mission of innovation. We’re presented with an opportunity to reevaluate practices, better plan, streamline and coordinate our efforts to maintain the momentum we have achieved and to ensure our efforts remain on track once we are on the other side of this.

You will often hear us speaking of the importance of community and collaboration, in times like these, this resonates more than ever as we rely on each other. Not only to ensure the continuation of all our activities and contributions, but also to provide a sense of togetherness, to reassure and to encourage the sustained well-being of our community. Moving forward, we will continue to support our global movement, using our social media channels to highlight important updates from the industry, support ongoing efforts and projects, provide insights into the role of innovation at this time, disseminate advice and share webinars and actions to participate in.

As an industry, we have persevered through challenging times, have shown our resilience, ingenuity and creativity to emerge all the better. I want to take a moment to thank you for your steadfast commitment to a vision of a good fashion industry.

Please take care of yourselves, those closest to you, your colleagues and communities.

With kind regards,

Katrin Ley,
Managing Director – Fashion for Good

Key findings from the Collaborative Ecovative Mycelium Pilot

Leather production can have varying environmental impacts depending on the practices and standards employed. While some traditional leather is produced using responsible and sustainable methods, there are also growing concerns around its environmental footprint.  While there are multiple “vegan” leather alternatives available on the market, many of them contain synthetic materials, have worse performance metrics than conventional leather, or are not available at scale. These partly plastic materials cannot be recycled and fewer still are compostable. Alongside this, synthetic foams, often made from polyurethane, are made from petroleum, a non-renewable virgin resource.  There are lots of opportunities for innovation in both leather and foam alternatives: Ecovative’s petrochemical-free mycelium hides and foam alternative promises to be a more sustainable alternative, grown in a fraction of time compared to animal leather, and with minimal resources.

    The Untapped Agricultural Waste Project

In February 2022, Fashion for Good started the ‘Untapped Agricultural Waste’ Project to validate and scale technologies capable of transforming agricultural residues into textile fibres. With catalytic funding from Laudes Foundation and collaboration from key industry partners such as adidas, Bestseller, PVH Corp., and Vivobarefoot, the project aims to reduce the negative impacts of burning agricultural waste, lessen dependence on virgin fibres, and foster the adoption of lower-impact alternatives.
