Position: Innovation Platform Technical Expert

We seek a Technical Expert who will be responsible for scouting, screening and conducting a technical/scientific “fit for purpose” evaluation of raw material, wet processing,manufacturing and end of use innovations. Deep industry and supply chain knowledge is required to assess the practical and commercial dimensions for piloting and scaling these innovations. The Technical Expert will also be responsible for supporting the innovation platform team from a technical and scientific perspective in their execution of innovation landscaping and projects. The Technical Expert will be part of the Fashion for Good innovation team and report to the Innovation Platform Director. 

Key responsibilities of the Technical Expert include:

Scouting and screening existing and new innovators

  • Scout and screen innovators (start-ups) according to Fashion for Good’s established screening framework. Execute in depth due diligence with a focus on the scientific and technical feasibility of the innovation. 
  • An assessment of the commercial viability as well as the steps required to scale the innovation, including the right partners required, equipment needed, price points, costs, risks and opportunities is a must. 
  • Provide robust guidance and support to the Innovation Platform team around scientific or technical questions relating to innovators within the raw materials, wet processing, manufacturing and then end of use space. 
  • Constantly map and update the landscape of innovators (start-ups), to further strengthen our scouting database in the different focus areas.
  • Establish and manage relationships with key textile technology institutions around the world (e.g. academia, governments, incubators) to support start-up scouting efforts

Managing innovator relationships and roadmap to scale

  • Support and at times lead the due diligence processes conducted prior to accepting innovators into the accelerator or scaling programmes including conducting technical and impact feasibility assessments.
  • Build roadmap to scale for select innovators – including pilot proposals, orchestration of different supply chain players, commercial considerations for scaling
  • Support the Innovation Platform team in their quarterly alumni engagement with a focus on understanding the innovators development/progress and TRL progression to date. 

Supporting Innovation team

  • Simplify complex scientific technologies so that a broad range of stakeholders both within and outside of Fashion for Good may understand the risks and opportunities of the innovation. 
  • Provide insight from within the fashion supply chain on how these innovations might be applied or piloted in order to inform Fashion for Good’s piloting route
  • Identify appropriate supply chain pilot partners, leveraging existing network and ecosystem where possible 
  • Assist Fashion for Good’s Innovation Platform Director in supporting innovators in their efforts to scale – in particular the Technical Expert should play a critical advisory role in assessing the technical and commercial feasibility of the innovator to participate in a project. 
  • Document all associated interactions in relevant tools (ex: airtable, landscape reports, etc)


The ideal candidate has a relevant track record and combines strong interpersonal skills with a self-starting, proactive attitude. 

The following skills/knowledge is essential:

  • Strong analytical and research skills with attention to detail
  • Strong MS powerpoint and presentation skills
  • Capacity to adapt to different settings and to work in a demanding and multicultural environment
  • A good understanding of the supply chain & the fashion industry
  • Self-starter with strong organisational and time management skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative thinker with the ability for sound judgement and accountability
  • A pro-active, enthusiastic, can-do attitude and comfortable dealing with uncertainty

The following work experience is essential:

  • Strong knowledge of material science – at least 5 years of work experience as an Innovation Engineer, Garment Engineer, Materials/Textile Engineer or similar
  • Experience within a garment manufacturing company is a must


Bachelor of Science in textile process engineering, textile technologies, apparel and textile manufacturing. Further qualifications, particularly a PhD is a plus. 


Proficiency in English is a requirement.
